Sometimes It's Okay to Draw on the Walls

January 10, 2014

Nice Grant winner John Anderson had a mission near and dear to my heart. He wanted to build a robot. Robots are great!

This probably isn't what you expected. Yes, I know - it's even cooler. The purpose of Anderson's Draw on the Walls project was to create a software-assisted robot capable of creating murals for installation at Big Car Service Center. Writing about art can be a little lacking, so I'll try and let the images here speak for themselves.

The housing for the marker that you see in the picture is attached to two lines that run to spools installed at the top corners of the drawing area. While interfaced with open-source drawing software the Drawbot hums along, sweeping along the wall and churning out images.

I didn't get to see the completed mural, but check out the detail on this right claw.

The Drawbot can be seen during Big Car Service Center's open hours (Wednesdays from 11am to 7pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm). That's a pretty nice way to spend an afternoon!
