PUP Stoppin' with Nice Grants

April 02, 2013

It seems like forever ago that we announced our Nice Grants winners, but now that we are in full-on Spring mode it looks like things are starting to... heat up with some of the projects. (insert laughter and applause here)

ANYWAYS, a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to stop by the People for Urban Progress (PUP) workspace in the Murphy Building to talk with Amy Crook about their project - creating a bus stop (affectionately called PUP Stops) out of salvaged stadium seating. You may have seen a few of these around the city, but you are more likely to have noticed that the majority of stops around the city have no sort of accommodations for seating.

After talking, Amy provided me with the contact information for Randy Domeck at Indianapolis Fabrications (iFab), and I had the opportunity to see a PUP Stop get put together.

...lo and behold - here is your seating solution. This pile was about 9 feet at the highest point, and used to take up the amount of area equivalent to a basketball court.

Also, there is quite a bit involved in getting these chairs on the ground. They need to have bases made, parts repainted, and everything gets disassembled and reassembled multiple times. It is amazing to see how much work goes in to this project.

Nice Grants is funding one PUP stop, which will go up in Broad Ripple later this spring. This is just the type of project that the Nice Grants program was created for. It is inspiring to see a dedicated group of people working with what they have to improve the city they love.

Keep checking in for more Nice Grants updates!
