SmallBox is big on bikes. If we could make the internet work on pedal power alone we would be more than happy to keep the entire thing afloat ourselves. When we saw that Nancy Stimson at Freewheelin' Community Bikes had applied for a Nice Grant we learned a little more about her organization and, sure enough, we were impressed.
Freewheelin' received a $1000 Nice Grant to help develop an apprentice mechanic / youth leadership program. When I had the chance to stop by I noticed that a lot of these kids know more about bike repair than I know about... anything.
One of the best parts of the program is the Earn-a-Bike program that allows children to work with a mentor to develop their mechanic skills. Once completed, they have earned their own bike (which they get to choose and fix up from Freewheelin's collection of donated bikes), a lock, a helmet and the right to progress into a leadership role.
Kids get to have all the fun, right?
Not entirely! Earn-a-Bike classes start on October 24 (this Thursday), October 26 (this Saturday), and November 5. Adults who would like to volunteer can sign up for volunteer orientation on Monday, November 11. Be sure to check out Freewheelin' Community Bike's site to sign up and do something nice!
