Making Change & Progress

July 15, 2014

Good news, gang, one of our Nice Grantee's, Make Change, is off and running... so much so that you can now officially earn credits for biking to work and exchange them for beer!

As I began writing this update and looking into everything that the folks behind Make Change are working on, I realized that I couldn’t sum up their program any better than they have. So, as a refresher, here’s what Make Change is all about:

“Make Change is a program for alternative currency in Midtown, a neighborhood of Indianapolis. If you do something good for your neighborhood you receive Currency that you can spend at local businesses for their products.”

Here’s a great infographic on how it works:

Make Change Process

Major Progress

Since kicking off with Nice Grants, the project has evolved dramatically. See, Make Change originally began as an exclusively “water” based currency program. Meaning, the activities that would earn an individual credits were mainly water-focused such as installing a rain barrel or planting a rain garden at home.

The idea to expand beyond water came naturally with the urban farming and, well, urbanism movement here in Indy. In 2014 the program now offers credits for a myriad of neighborhood nicing activities such as planting a tree, starting a compost or, my personal favorite, biking to work.

In addition to the expansion of credit-earning activities, Make Change has also brought several new businesses that accept credits into the fold such as the quaint Sobro urban-farming shop, Agrarian, Good Earth natural food store and even restaurants like Broad Ripple Brew Pub and Duos Kitchen.

Get in the Game

Obviously you’re ready to start earning credits right this minute. If you’re like me, you’ve already blown it and missed opportunities to earn free groceries all spring!

To get started:

  1. Take a few "proof" photos of your activities
  2. Send a photo to one of their social accounts: Use #makechangeindy and tag our account on either Facebook,Twitter, or Instagram.
  3. Fill out this form to start an account.
  4. Spend your credits at one of the local businesses involved!

Join me in getting this awesome concept to become adopted by using their hashtag at least once per month this summer and you’ll have earned some bonus points in our book!
