Cultivating Mindfulness

January 15, 2016

When you think of things like "mindfulness" and "yoga," you might think of someone blissed out and meditating on their yoga mat in a studio somewhere. What might not be an obvious first thought is the idea of a fourth grader cultivating mindfulness in the middle of the school day, but it's this very idea that powers Mighty Lotus, a 2015 Nice Grants winner.

Executive Director Alyssa Pfenning started the program because she believes in the power of mindful movement. Mighty Lotus is not just about yoga, but about using the practice of mindfulness to help individuals navigate through life. Currently, the organization serves in eight partner schools, using yoga and mindfulness to improve attention and mood, and promote well being. The Nice Grant that Mighty Lotus received is supporting their work in Frederick Douglass IPS #19.

The organization is continuing to grow and focus on sustainability for the future. This looks like increasing programs and staff, as well as continuing to give their teachers great training.

If you'd like to support Mighty Lotus, you can donate on their website, or attend a By Donation class at a partner studio this MLK Day! All proceeds will benefit a Mighty Lotus program.
